From Dream to Reality
Have you ever had a God-given dream that seemed impossible to achieve? Maybe you've felt a calling to make a difference in your community or even change the world, but you're not sure where to start. The story of Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem offers powerful insights into how we can turn our God-inspired visions into reality.
Let's explore five crucial steps that can help us move from merely dreaming to actively accomplishing God's will.
Move from Uncertainty to Mission
The first step in making a dream become reality is moving from uncertainty to a concrete mission. Nehemiah didn't just complain about Jerusalem's broken walls; he took action. As he declared to the clan leaders:
"You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace" (Nehemiah 2:17).
Like Nehemiah, we need to move beyond simply talking about problems to actually doing something about them. What mission is God calling you to embrace?
Shift from Consumer to Player
For years, the people of Jerusalem had been spectators, wishing someone would fix their city's walls. Nehemiah challenged them to become active participants in the solution. He inspired them to say, "Let us start rebuilding" (Nehemiah 2:18).
As followers of Christ, we're all called to ministry. It's time to stop asking, "What do I get out of it?" and start asking, "How can God use me to make a difference?" How can you move from the sidelines to become a player in God's work?
Embrace Teamwork over Individualism
Nehemiah didn't build the wall alone. He organized teams and enlisted everyone's help. The Bible gives a detailed account of all the different groups involved in the rebuilding effort (Nehemiah 3:1-32).
While the American spirit often emphasizes rugged individualism, the kingdom of God thrives on teamwork. We have a mission, but we're going to accomplish it together. How can you contribute your unique gifts to a larger team effort for God's kingdom?
Graduate from Casual Giver to Wholehearted Giver
The people of Jerusalem had to step up their commitment, moving from casual to wholehearted giving. They pledged, "We assume responsibility for bringing to the house of the Lord each year the firstfruits of our crops" (Nehemiah 10:35).
Casual giving just won't cut it when it comes to accomplishing great things for God. Churches that make a real difference are filled with wholehearted givers. How can you raise the bar in your own giving to support God's work?
Combine Prayer and Action
Finally, Nehemiah's team didn't choose between praying or working – they did both simultaneously. They built the wall with one hand and held a weapon in the other, always ready to defend their work (Nehemiah 4:16-18).
We too can pray and work at the same time, trusting God while taking action. What steps of faith and action is God calling you to take right now?
Putting It Into Practice
Nehemiah's wall was completed in just 52 days because the people committed wholeheartedly to the vision. Their enemies were astonished, realizing "this work had been done with the help of our God" (Nehemiah 6:16).
What dream has God placed on your heart? Whether it's supporting a ministry, reaching out to your community, or making a difference in your workplace, I challenge you to apply these five steps. Move from uncertainty to mission, become an active player, embrace teamwork, give wholeheartedly, and combine prayer with action.
Remember, when we make commitments, it starts something rolling in the kingdom of heaven. Things begin to happen, change takes place, and God's kingdom moves forward. What commitment will you make today to turn your God-given dream into reality?
Reflection:
1. In what areas of your life have you been a spectator rather than an active participant in God's work?
2. How can you move from uncertainty to having a clear sense of mission for God's kingdom?
3. What would it look like for you to become a "wholehearted giver" rather than a casual one?
4. How can you better work as part of a team to accomplish God's purposes?
Application:
Choose one specific way you can become more actively involved in building God's kingdom this week. This could be volunteering for a ministry, increasing your giving, or reaching out to serve someone in need. Take a concrete step to move from spectator to participant.
Prayer:
Lord, forgive me for the times I've been content to sit on the sidelines rather than actively participating in your work. Give me a clear sense of mission and the courage to step out in faith. Help me to give wholeheartedly of my time, talents and resources. Show me how to work effectively with others to build your kingdom. Use me to make a difference for your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
